Pet Ownership Course

Responsible Pet Ownership Class

The Responsible Pet Ownership Course (REPO) is for those who have been sentenced by the court to take this class. Instructors will explain the laws and responsibilities surrounding pet ownership and talk about caring for your pet. This is not a dog-training course.

People who have pled guilty to the less serious animal-related offenses may be sentenced to complete this REPO course. If the violator successfully completes the three-hour course, the prosecutor may reduce or eliminate fines and/or remove a conviction from the person’s record. Eligibility for the program is determined by the prosecutor in cooperation with the court.

REPO was designed to provide an educational alternative to punitive actions that place demands on court resources and do little to impact animal-owner behavior. An additional benefit of this course is the potential reduction of future incidents that put humans and animals at risk.

We offer the course once a month and we alternate between the first Wednesday night and the first Saturday morning. Please see the course schedule for specific dates. The classes are held at the
San Diego County Department of Animal Services
5480 Gaines Street, San Diego, CA 92110

Similar to traffic school, this program was developed by County Animal Services in cooperation with the San Diego City Attorney’s office and the County of San Diego District Attorney’s office.
